My wife and I filled Married Jointly and would like to change to Married separately. Is that possible?

Unfortunately not. Two separately filed returns may be combined into one joint return, but Form 1040X states right on the first page that you ';cannot change from joint to separate returns after the due date.'; IRS Publication 501 (linked below) confirms this position. My wife and I filled Married Jointly and would like to change to Married separately. Is that possible?
If one of you files married seperate, both of you have to.

Trust me: you don't want to do this. Married seperate is the worst way to file ever invented. Satan himself introduced this method back when he was serving in Congress.

(I'm having trouble figuring out how you're going to amend, though. I don't think it's possible if you've already filed.)My wife and I filled Married Jointly and would like to change to Married separately. Is that possible?
No. Once a joint return is filed, it is NOT possible to go back and amend to separate returns once the due date for filing has passed.

You CAN file separately first and then go back and amend to a joint return, but not the other way around.
Not for '06 you can't
Sure go to your employers office and change it.
Yes, you can change. Even for 2006 though you filed a return, you can file an Amended Tax Return and change from Married Joint to Married Separately. Keep in mind that the tax may be higher for a separate return though you can try it both ways and see what works best (generally there is less tax on a joint return however that is not always the case).

Although some answers provided to you said you cannot change to a separate return for 2006, that is not correct and you may change for any open year (3 years from date of filing the return). You would need to prepare the amended return however.
