Why is it illegal for gays to get married?

I'm not gay so it's not like this affects me in any way, but I don't understand it. Whats the big deal about same sex marriages? If you love someone and want to comit yourself to them why not. It seems to me that our government is being closed minded about the situation.

(I am a supporter of our government, i just don't understand)

any ideas? Why is it illegal for gays to get married?
because most of our government is religious and it states in the bible that it is wrong to be with the same sex . don't get me wrong because i have good friends that are gay but it is in the bible that it is wrong.and so their for people are not going to go against gods words .Why is it illegal for gays to get married?
I agree who gives a ****
because you vote Republican
The separation between church and state does not exist. It's only a line in the constitution. Plus lawmakers and politicians only do what the people who give them the most money want.
Here in Belgium it's legal.
Marriage is a legally recognized union that effects all kinds of rights from children to benefits to taxes. Allowing same sex marriage would expose corporations to spousal benefits that could total billions of dollars.

It would also undermine conservative religious doctrines that also tend to be supportive of the government. Radical liberalism creates change at a pace that is very uncomfortable for the dstatus quo and entrenched politicians.
CUZ IT NAZTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, I don't think anyone knows. There actually isn't a coherent answer to that question. The scary thing is the number of people on this site that make comments like ';liberals want gays to get married so there will be no more babies!';

The fact that I heard that once is too much.

Although, a lot of Americans come from traditions of squeamishness about sexual issues and bodily functions, and despite the first amendment, feel compelled to pass laws based on what they consider ';moral'; regardless of whether there's a practical harm involved.
Is it actually illegal or just not recognized? ie do you get punished if you have a private ceremony or do you not get marital benefits from the government? If you mean just not recognized, I would imagine it might have to do with why the government supports straight marriages. I think the government does it because straight people can have children, of course that doesn't mean they will, but just the thought of it is tempting. Governments want children and in some countries they are now even paying people to have them. I'd guess this is also why their are cohabitation laws that treat such straight couples as married although the individuals would deny being married.
The american government doesnt understand the concept of a seperation of church and state so they let the Christian idea that gays are bad get in the way of giving its citizens the rights that all human beings are entitled to.
Puritanical ideals still have clout with politicians selling themselves to the majority. Do you think that if the Democrats were in office that these rights would have been settled?
There truly should be no reason why two people who love and respect each other, and want to commit to a life-long relationship should not be married. Unfortunately, many in America find same-sex marriage as ';offensive'; and ';Immoral.'; This is a mystery to me as many of these same people find a senseless war in Iraq to be acceptable, and torture of people wrongly imprisoned (without being charged with a crime)to be morally acceptable. Many Americans are simply too prudish, and it goes back to our early Puritan beginnings. If the moral warriors want to defend marriage, they should work to reduce divorces, not deny loving couples the choice to live and love in peace.
The US government bases itself to an alarming degree on biblical morals and concepts. Someone should tell them that seperation of church and state is a good idea. I mean, you guys even have ';In God We Trust'; printed right there on your banknotes! Gee whillickers.
i really don't understand that whole thing. i think it is because they don't want it because the bible said so. but to me its like why cant 18 yr olds drink were supposed to be adults. Its going to be on going situation for a long time till we all can agree with the same idea. but think of this they bring up the whole same sex, when they raised our gas prices.
Marriage is , and always has been between men %26amp; women .It would take something away from that to change the ';rules'; now . I think gays do have the right to be bonded in a permanent union with the same ';so-called'; benefits';. Maybe a legal ';commitment ceremony ';or something; some sort of legal bonding .
Why is it illegal for a teen, to consume alchohol and enter a broathel?

If gay marriages are legal, the teens can very well have alchohol and enjoy!

It is the mind of set of those gays after marriage, feel that they are having enjoyment and contended life. Religion and laws can only preach their followers, the good and the bad; boons and taboos.

If one argues, the argument will remain without finding a solution!
I don't know. I'm not gay either but I feel it's wrong to deny someone the right to be happy.

I look at it like this... these government ';officals'; are letting their own personal opinions on the sitution get in the way. I thought that we were suppose to keep religion and state (government) separate? That's what's been the dilemma with the 10 Commandments in front of court houses.

I believe that the government has no right to tell people that cannot get married, just because it's not right (not the best wording, I know) by scriptures in the Bible. These people pay taxes just like anyone else. They should be allowed to have the same liberties as every straight person and take up their issues with God.
I think gay people should be able to get married, love is love no matter what sex you are

The government is a bit silly on this one
The American gays have been coming here into Canada and have been getting legally married then when all the paperwork is done they go back over the border to the US as a married couple. This really p1sses off the US politicians. I think it's funny...LOL
I think it's the same concept as to why our country has denied basic civil rights to blacks, women, and immigrants in the past.

Prejudice and stubbornness. Some people believe that being gay is evil. It is they who oppose gay marriage.
Many states %26amp; municipalities have already added domestic partnerships and civil unions to their civil codes and the terminolgy of marriage has historically symbolized the union between a man and a woman. Provide the rights just sidestep the term marriage and the problem is solved
Though I dont have exact answer to your questions but definitely I can say that medical practitioners know much of the pros and cons of the marriage of gays. Had it been justified, the government must have allowed by now.
coz,

if a gay married with another gay,

there's no baby will born....

it canna be a BIG DISASTER if there's no human in the world
Being a woman who loves another woman, I don't get it, either.

Does anyone think Britney Spears and Kevin Federline have a marriage that the traditionalists would approve of? How about atheists or Pagans or swingers? Yet their marriages are legal. Why can't mine be?

If they don't like it, they don't have to officiate or show up at the wedding or smile at us on the street. Simple enough.
I think the reason why if because most of our senators, representatives, governors, and all the people involved with the government are raised in an era where gays were considered to be the devil incarnate or something sinful. It's pretty hard to change your views when you had them most of your life.
cause got made holes, not poles....eve, not steve....
